Canada has never experienced such record warm nighttime temperatures before. The record high temperatures occurred in Canada’s maritime provinces, where temperatures should be much colder than they were this past week.

ABC Columbia writes:

Meteorological winter is different from astronomical winter and refers to December, January, and February. There are many reasons for this – one being that it’s easier to keep track of records by month. Just a few days ago, Canada experienced its warmest meteorological winter night on record.

“We just witnessed the warmest winter night in Canadian history. Parts of Nova Scotia didn’t drop below 60 °F (15.5 °C) all night long. This is warmer than an average summer night!”

Watch the dome of extreme anomalous warmth just sit over Canada for the next few days. Places that are usually -20 to -30 °C at this time of year will only be a few degrees below freezing. pic.twitter.com/6GUy9XvnvQ

Record-setting winter warmth has become more common in Nova Scotia over the last 15 years. Here’s another recent example from Jan 2018 when the overnight temperature remained near 17C at Cheticamp, NS pic.twitter.com/iGPanrHEhl

Warmer than a summer night. We have a lot of work to do.
