Well. I don’t think I have ever heard of this happening before. The unidentified teacher is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after taking a bullet from a six-year-old student at point-blank range. Police arrived within minutes of the shooting and identified the teacher as a female in her thirties.
The young child was arrested and will not be identified due to age, but he is a male. There was an altercation between the student and the teacher when she was shot. The weapon was a handgun. No information on the parents is available at this time.
Local school officials promised a quick review and a plan to stop it from happening again.
"This was not an accidental shooting," Newport News police Chief Steve Drew said.
No students were injured in the afternoon shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, police said in a statement.
The shooting happened in a first-grade classroom, and the child and teacher, who knew each other, were apparently alone, Drew said at an evening news conference.
"The altercation was between a 6-year-old, the student, who did have the firearm, and the teacher, and then a round was fired," the chief said.
The teacher, a woman in her 30s, was hospitalized, officials said.
“Her injuries are still considered life-threatening, but there was some improvement in the last update that we got,” the chief said Friday evening.
The chief said the 6-year-old boy will not be identified because of his age.
There were no other injuries; the teacher was the only one targeted.
The drills that prepare children for shootings by running and hiding in closets paid off. That is precisely what they did.
There had to be warning signs for a six-year-old boy with that many violent tendencies and rage to do something like this.
